Case Study: Manufacturing a Mission Critical Flame Deflector for NASA’s Artemis Program

L&H Industrial Supports Kennedy Space Center with High Performance Cladding Plate Solutions

When the Artemis I launch damaged the massive flame deflector system at Launch Pad 39B, NASA faced the challenge of replacing the worn structure. The extreme heat and force compromised the cladding plates inside the flame trench, creating a need for a more durable solution that could perform in one of the harshest environments on earth.

L&H Industrial worked closely with NASA and Amentum to explore what was possible within advanced fabrication capabilities. Early investment in research, development, and full-scale prototype manufacturing positioned the team to validate performance before production and help support the next phase of Artemis missions. The result strengthened the foundation for future launches while proving the value of hands-on engineering and precision manufacturing.
